Mucus Plug Explained: Does Labor Start When You Lose It?
Ever heard of the mucus plug? Here's what it does during pregnancy.
The mucus plug forms in the cervix early in pregnancy. Its main job? To protect your baby! It acts as a barrier, sealing the cervix and keeping out bacteria and infections.
Throughout pregnancy, it stays in place, acting like a protective shield. As you approach labor, the cervix begins to thin and dilate, causing the mucus plug to dislodge.
You might notice it as a thick discharge, sometimes tinged with a small amount of blood. This is called the 'bloody show' and is a sign that your body is preparing for labor! Do know that other women will lose their mucus plug slowly and it will be more watery in consistency.
Losing the mucus plug can happen days or even weeks before labor starts. It's one of the many ways your body gets ready for your baby's arrival.
