Move Over / Slow Down Law
The law requires motorists to take certain actions when approaching an authorized emergency vehicle, tow truck, or Texas Department of Transportation vehicle. When approaching one of these vehicles parked on the side of the road with emergency lights activated, the motorist must vacate the lane nearest the emergency vehicle if possible. If the motorist cannot change lanes then they must reduce their speed by 20 miles under the posted speed limit. If the motorist is already in a reduced speed zone of 25 mph or less, then they must reduce their speed to 5 mph. Once the emergency vehicle has been passed then the motorist can merge back into the original lane and can accelerate to the posted speed limit.
