Why No One Cares About These Disney Details
Shout out to all my fellow Disney level 4s 🙌 you are my people 💜🥰
Imagineer Kevin Lively once told me and my Distory p0dcast co-host Kirk that they design for waders, swimmers, and divers… waders are people who will only care about/notice the overall theming. Swimmers will appreciate some of the puns and catch on to a bit of the story. And divers are the Disney nerds who love the tiny details and backstories that make the attraction come to life in a new way.
But let’s go back to the 4 levels established by Walt Disney… Level 4 is the attention to detail Imagineers must achieve in order to get full buy-in from people on the story imagineering is trying to tell (whether or not they fully appreciate it). Design Imagineer Coulter Winn describes the levels like this:
Level 1: You’re in the country, you see over the trees some tall buildings, maybe a church steeple
Level 2: You’ve walked into town, now you’re on Main Street
Level 3: You’re looking closely at the colors and texture of the buildings
Level 4: You’ve gone up to the front door and you’re grabbing the handle, feeling the texture and temperature of the material
(Obviously I’ve taken this a step further with my Big Thunder analogy, but you get the gist)
Whatever level you experience Disney as, all of them are valid, and Disney was designed with all of them in mind. So its just as valid to eat a turkey leg and enjoy the vibes as it is to obsess over obscure references in a queue. There’s room for all of us 🥰
