The buildingEXODUS software was used to explore how high-rise construction site evacuation could be improved. In this simulation hoists are incorported into the evacuation procedures. Enhancements in evacuation performance are dependent on a number of factors, including the height of construction, the number of workers on site, the number of available hoists, the performance capabilties and capacities of the hoists. For construction sites of up to 42 levels with some 600 workers serviced by fast hoists with large capacity, evacuation times can be reduced by 30% if all workers make use of the hoists. However, with slower and smaller capacity hoists, evacaution times can be increased by 80%.
