The Biden Administration issues new rules for short-term health plans
The Biden Administration issued new final rules for short-term health insurance plans, undoing a 2018 and 2019 extension of the rules and bringing them more in-line with the previous rules.
The new rules from the Departments of Health and Human Services, Labor, and the Treasury will limit short-term health plans to provide coverage for four months at most instead of the previous three-year period with renewals.
The rules will also require insurers to be more transparent about these plans so consumers don't mistakenly purchase one instead of comprehensive health coverage.
These new rules take effect in June 2024 and apply to new plans and renewals after September 1, 2024.
