This video is the result of a passion I stumbled upon 2 years ago and have been tending to regularly ever since. In mid-2018 I started hand-feeding birds outside my home in York County, New Brunswick. It started with the Ruby-Throated Hummingbird, continued with the Black-Capped Chickadee and by the summer of 2020 two years later, I had fed 22 species of wild birds by hand as well as a red squirrel. This video was a massive project and I collected footage over a two-year period across all seasons. I stood outside in bitter cold reaching as low as -26 C (-15F) and had to wear protective gear to cope with the hordes of insects in spring and summer in order to capture these moments on video. In this video, you can experience with me all of the moments where each new bird visited me for the very first time. At first I set out to feed just one type of bird, but then an avalanche of moments I did not foresee occurred. It was a genuine pursuit and it unfolded naturally, something I never saw myself doing even a few months before it began.
I tried to find out if there was a record for a person who has fed the most species of wild birds by hand as 22 is a fairly decent number especially in front of one’s home. I couldn’t find any such record or information after having contacted the Guinness Book of World Records and the National Audubon Society for an answer. This 7 hour compilation shows a 2 year pursuit that took incredible patience and determination to achieve. This truly took great effort to produce this work and I believe that the experiences affirm the beauty of life. I recently decided that it was time to go through all of the footage I had taken and create the definitive compilation of all of my birding experiences so far. I sifted through a few hundred gigabytes of video and compiled what I thought were the best moments. So, here it is and I hope you enjoy it. I have created a table of contents so you can click to see the video chapter on each bird. Each video chapter focuses on a specific bird and the chapters themselves are arranged in the order that each new bird landed on the hand starting with the first. Within each chapter is a chronologically ordered sequence of video clips of the particular bird featured. The table of contents will also be posted as a “pinned comment” in the comment section.
