Making an Ablative Rocket Engine
We just hot fired our new Ablative rocket engine. This engine uses carbon fiber and silica composite to contain the hot temperatures and high pressures of combustion. The composite material ablates away inside the engine and acts as a thermal barrier allowing for sustained burn durations. This was a subscale prototype allowing us to develop the manufacturing process for composites. We plan to fire bigger ablative engines soon!
