Heather was already suffering from health problems when she was filming "Poltergeist III - The Final Chapter", which was the last film in the series. She became tragically ill a few days before she died. One morning she was getting ready to go to the hospital, but she fell unconscious. Her stepfather then called the doctors and Heather was taken to the hospital in serious condition. She died on the operating table at 2:43 pm. Doctors were unable to identify the reason for the illness in time to save the young girl. Only after Heather died was it discovered that the disease was an intestinal blockage. Surgery would have solved the problem and saved the life of the promising actress.
The fatal confusion was due to a previous medical error. In early 1987, Heather had been misdiagnosed as suffering from Crohn's Disease and had been receiving treatment for about a year to manage a chronic, incurable disease that she never actually had. The autopsy would reveal that the cause of the obstruction that took his life was a congenital stenosis, something that would be extremely simple to treat and cure compared to Crohn's Disease, which usually lasts for the patient's entire life. The emergency surgery, which sought to alleviate the consequences of an illness that never existed in Heather, was performed under the impact of intestinal obstruction, which ended up giving her a fatal septic shock.
She was buried at Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery.
