At the end of 1423, Alfonso V of Aragon returned from his travels in Italy, facing an increasingly perilous situation for the interests of the Crown of Aragon and his brothers in the Kingdom of Castile. The monarch returned to lead a conflict against his native Castile before finally turning to what had become his true obsession: the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples. Why did he decide never to return to the Crown of Aragon once he had achieved it? How did he attempt to become a champion of Christianity against the rising Ottoman Empire in the Balkans?
