Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean: History’s Most Forgotten Group
Who were the Jewish pirates of the Caribbean? History may have largely forgotten, but hundreds of years ago, one of the most prolific group of pirates or privateers throughout the Americas were those of Sephardic Jewish origin recently exiled from Spain. Likely motivated partially by revenge, many of these privateers and adventurers would find employment by the English to raid Spanish ships or terrorize their settlements. Many outposts were established by Jewish pirates throughout the Caribbean such as Port Royal in Jamaica, the Guianas, Aruba, Curacao, the Lesser Antilles and elsewhere, making them a force to be reckoned with.
