Why don’t Americans consider Indians to be “Asian”?
Why do most Americans not consider Indians and other South Asians to be "Asian"? Is it because they're stupid and ignorant? Maybe. In this case, the everyday vernacular used in the US to refer to racial categories is extremely flawed, but has it's roots in their history and experiences of Asian Americans in the country. As the Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos and others from East and Southeast Asia were some of the first Asians to arrive in the country, the term Asian has mostly been used to refer to these groups, while South Asians have long been recognized as racially and culturally distinct from these people groups. When not being used to refer to Native Americans, the term "Indian" is often used by Americans for all South Asians, including Pakistanis, Bangladeshis, Nepalis and Sri Lankans, which can certainly be frustrating on the part of these other groups. This is very different in other parts of the English-speaking world such as the UK, where Asian is primarily used for South Asians as well as East Asians, as this is simply the vocabulary that developed over the centuries. Maybe someone in the comments can explain why the term "Oriental" fell out of fashion and is now considered derogatory by some. Thanks for watching
