"Got to be Monday (1986) was the first single from Doug’s solo album ‘Animato’ so not really a band video, but the Slugs are making their presence felt. Doug co-wrote the song with John Burton, and asked me to produce the album. We blew a portion of our budget hiring the legendary Tower of Power Horns to play on this track, they were in town for a gig. Ironically, Bon Jovi was recording Slippery When Wet across the hall, producer Bruce Fairbairn considered hiring TOP for that album but decided it was too extravagant. They sold 12 million copies. Animato barely reached 15 thousand but damn those horns sound good!
Doug’s vision for this ‘Monday the 13th’ was a black and white knock-off of the schlock horror genre. Terry David Mulligan was the obnoxious voice on the clock radio by Doug’s bed, which had to be taken apart and reassembled so it would fly apart when he smashed it. I was type cast as Lurch who serves as Doug’s trusty manservant, and I believe Joani Taylor (who sang background vocals on the album) plays the Bates Motel nightmare granny. Sorry to say I can’t remember the name of the actor who plays the ghost/Jason/sax player characters.
We shot on 16mm film in a venerable Kitsilano home, I hope it escaped the bulldozers. I suppose the dynamic duo of Doug & I will split the Oscar on this one (!) Lurch’s gruesome grin and rigor mortis dance are noteworthy as is Doug’s convincing performance as the worker who refuses to wake up and his brilliant exit in suit jacket, nightgown and bedroom slippers. Everyman, having the ultimate bad hair day."
