Lewis wrote "Django" in 1954 as a tribute to his friend, Django Reinhardt, who had died the previous year.
Django died 10 years before I was born, but I did get to spend a little time with his collaborator Stephane Grappelli who was and still is my #1 musical influence.
Django might be the all time champion of musicians who wore their spirits on the outside. Every note he ever played dripped with the brilliant joy of his beautiful soul.
