Social Media E-Professionalism and Sign Language Interpreters
E-professionalism is a term that refers to traditional professional values manifested in the online environment, and this presentation will explore applications of e-professionalism specific to sign language interpreters and social media. Several theoretical constructs will be presented to facilitate useful dialog on issues such as confidentiality and promotion. Recent research exploring sign language interpreters' own perceptions of e-professionalism in the field will also be presented for discussion. This presentation will raise awareness of relevant e-professionalism considerations on social media and offer frameworks to guide constructive conversations around this increasingly important realm of professional competency.
Brett Best is a UK-based, fully qualified American Sign Language (ASL), British Sign Language (BSL) and English interpreter. She holds a BA degree in Deaf Studies from Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., an MSc in European Masters in Sign Language Interpreting (EUMASLI) from Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, and she is currently studying toward a Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education through University of Wisconsin-Milwuakee. Her current research interests include the professionalisation processes of sign language interpreting and how technology is impacting the interpreting profession.
