The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes antibiotic resistance as one of the larges tissues in global health. Antibiotics are a class of drugs designed to kill harmful bacteria. However, when bacteria gain the ability to resist these effects, certain infections can persist, ultimately leading to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs and increased mortality. In this video, we aim to introduce bacteria, antibiotics and the phenomenon of antibiotic resistance, discuss why this is a global threat and finally, explain some things we can do as individuals to combat this issue drawn from the expertise of Dr. Ana Tomljenovic-Berube, a professor in the Faculty of Science at McMaster University. Through this survey of topics, we aim to convey the severity of antibiotic resistance and encourage you to reflect on ways you can contribute to reducing the threat.
