In "The Hero and the Crown" by Robin McKinley, everyone says that Aerin's mother was a witchwoman. Everyone says she died after giving birth to Aerin--the daughter who should have been a son; the child who should have been an heir. Aerin has done her best to deal with growing up as a royal disappointment--though she relishes the freedom that such a label allows her, especially when she begins fighting dragons.
But the dragons, it turns out, are only a small part of Aerin's destiny. No, Aerin may not be the male heir the kingdom wanted, but the battle she'll wage on its behalf will be epic in its intensity--and its consequences.
