To check if your theme supports showing author descriptions:
— Go to Appearance, then Themes on the menu...
— Click Customise and then Theme Options...
— Look for something relating to author bio or similar... or just check the theme's documentation!
So what about plugins? The best ones we found were:

Starbox — similar but a little less comprehensive.
