The Dassault Mirage F1: 5 Fun Facts.
A few interesting facts about the aircraft over its 56-year history.
In the early 1960s, the French Air Force expressed its desire for an aircraft that was capable of flying at low altitudes in all weathers, as well as operating on short, rudimentary landing strips. With this in mind, Dassault Aviation designed and developed the Mirage F1.
First entering service in 1973, over 700 examples of the Mirage F1 were built and delivered before production ended in 1992. With the aircraft still active and flying around the world today, how much do you know about the Mirage F1 and its 56-year history?
1. The Mirage F1's impressive operational performance
The Mirage F1 took its first flight on December 23rd, 1966, and was formally introduced about seven years later. It can reach a maximum speed of Mach 2.2 (1,688 mph) thanks to the 15,000 lb of thrust provided by its powerful SNECMA Atar 9K-50 engine.
Dassault Aviation's Mirage F1 has a range of 459 miles but can be refueled midair if needed in order to boost its range further. The fighter jet can also reach a maximum altitude of 52,000 ft. By comparison, the maximum flying altitude of an Airbus A320 is 39,000 ft, and for the Boeing 747, 45,000 ft.
2. The aircraft's predecessor was the Mirage III
The Mirage F1 was developed as a successor to the Mirage III, which was the first Western European combat aircraft to achieve speeds of Mach 2. Production of the Mirage III family began in 1952, and the aircraft made its first test flight four years later.
The Mirage III finally entered into service in 1961 with the Pakistan Air Force, and Dassault Aviation went on to manufacture over 1,400 of the type. Although the aircraft proved popular with militaries around the globe, it needed long runways in order to land, which ultimately led to the development of the Mirage F1, incorporating a different wing design to overcome this problem.
3. The aircraft's innovative swept wing design
Thanks in part to its swept wing, the Mirage F1 is capable of short take-offs and landings. The design of the wing creates additional lift through its leading edge and double-slot flaps. This means that the Mirage F1 can use shorter, rudimentary landing strips, which are often relatively hidden from view, making them ideal for military operations.
By contrast, the delta wing design of its predecessor, the Mirage III, required pilots to use longer runways. As mentioned earlier, this disadvantage led to the French Air Force stipulating that the Mirage F1 fighter must be capable of short take-offs and landings.
4. The Mirage F1 was a commercial success
Dassault Aviation's Mirage F1 aircraft was a resoundingly successful program. A total of 726 examples were built before production ended in 1992, including 473 which were exported. In all, the aircraft was operated by 14 air forces around the world, including those of France, Greece, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Qatar, Spain, and South Africa.
As such, the Mirage F1 has been utilized in several high-profile conflicts worldwide, including the Iran-Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan, where the fighter was used for interception and anti-shipping missions in particular. Five air forces still operate the Mirage F1 - Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Iran, Libya, and Morocco.
5. Twelve variants of the Mirage F1 were created
Dassault Aviation produced twelve different variants of the Mirage F1, the original being the Mirage F1 C. The Mirage F1 A was later developed at the request of the South African Air Force and came with simplified electronic equipment and additional fuel capacity.
The Mirage F1 B features two pilot seats and was designed and built specially for the Kuwait Air Force. The Mirage F1 R variant was optimized for low-altitude day and night reconnaissance. Other versions of the aircraft include the Mirage F1 AZ and the Mirage F1 M53.
Dassault Aviation is still going strong today and continues to produce several military and non-military aircraft, including the Rafale, which the French Air Force uses extensively. The manufacturer is also working collaboratively across Europe to create the New Generation Fighter (NGF) aircraft, which it hopes will be in service by 2040.
The Dassault Falcon series of business jets is also still in production and continues to prove popular with customers globally. Its latest incarnation, the Falcon 10X, will enter into service at the end of 2025 and boasts impressive performance credentials, a luxurious cabin interior, and state-of-the-art technology. The aircraft's range of up to 7,500 NM is also among the best in its class.
