The construction work on multipurpose Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project had been carrying out day and night. The project is moving ahead with a good pace and WAPDA is confident to complete the project during high flow season in 2025 as per the timelines.

Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project is the 5th highest concrete-face-rock-fill Dam (CFRD) in the world. To build 213m high dam, two diversion tunnels having diameter 15m are being excavated on the right bank. The excavation and support activities are going on in day and night shifts. The tunnels excavation is being excavated from multiple work fronts and in different layers due to bigger diameter. The total length of both tunnels is about 3,300m. Diversion Tunnel 1 is the inner tunnel at river bed level and Diversion Tunnel 2 is the outer tunnel approximately 12 m higher at the inlet. After completion of the river diversion, Diversion Tunnel 2 will be converted as a Low-Level Outlet and Flushing Outlet.

At spillway and ancillary structures, about 6.5 million cubic meter excavation are involved. The rock excavation is being done with drilling and blasting method. The experienced drilling and blasting crew involved in this specialized work to conduct control blasting. Furthermore, hundreds of Earthmoving machineries are deployed for such huge excavation works.

To ensure constant irrigation releases to Munda Headworks canals, a Re-regulation Pond to store water released from the dam during the peak generation is designed. The excavation of river bed down to elevation of 360m to create a pond is in progress. On completion, the pond capacity would be about 9 Million cubic meters to create a pond downstream of Dam up to Munda Headworks.

Project infrastructure requirements included temporary facilities such as crushing and batching plants, access roads, Chinese Colony, main office building, and other associated structures have been completed and occupied. The local employees’ colony is located at the right bank of swat river and about 1600 Pakistani workers are living in the dormitories.

To meet the aggregate requirement for the construction of dam and axillary structures, the crush plant has been erected at right bank of the swat river.

The project is scheduled to be completed in five years and eight months. It will store about 1.2 million acre feet (MAF) of water, generate 800 megawatt (MW), contribute 2.86 billion units of low-cost hydel electricity annually to the national grid and help mitigate floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Naushera. Besides supplementing 160,000 acres of existing land, about 16,700 acres of new land will also be irrigated because of Mohmand Dam. In addition, 300 million gallons water per day will also be provided to Peshawar for drinking purpose. Annual benefits of the project have been estimated at Rs 51.6 billion, he added.
