IP Protection ratings are important to electronic, mechanical and many other types of equipment, particularly in outdoor, harsh and clean room environments where high levels of water, moisture, sand, dust or dirt are characteristic of the application.
The higher a product's IP rating, the greater the level of protection against ingress and, therefore, damage.
The IP Rating standard is similar to the US NEMA standard and provides more robust clarification and guarantees of protection than vague descriptions such as 'waterproof', 'water resistant' por 'vandal proof'.
The rating level will specify just how water or moisture proof a device is; is it proofed against the odd splash of water, heavy rain or complete immersion?
Is it protected against dust and dirt, or oil and harsh chemicals?
HowToAV's Steve Collin explains how to decipher the IP number / protection rating of your product to meet the demands of your application.
