CEDIA's David Meyer talks to HowToAV about AV over IP (Audio Visual over Internet Protocol) which is currently a realistic alternative to, for example, SDVoE and Dante AV, as well as the more established technologies such as HDBaseT. Even though AV over IP has been around a long time, the latest advancements in chip sets, Codecs & compression has seen the technological capability behind AV over IP leap forward considerably in recent years.

When designing an AV system there are many considerations. Is 1 Gbit of bandwidth enough or do we need to go to 10 Gbit? Distributing content within a residential environment is unlikely to require such a high bandwidth. Is latency an important factor?
How about picture quality and resolution? With image sizes rapidly increasing–from HD to 4K @ 24, 60, then 120 fps, and now 8K in the last few years–what's the best way to distribute such large amounts of data? Distinguishing between streaming content and distributed content can help pin down the system design.
When should you make the move to AV over IP as opposed other technologies? One advantage is that AV over IP is infinitely scalable and can normally be distributed over an existing Cat6 network. AV over IP distribution is simpler and not centralised which can be an advantage over the more traditional matrix switches. However, AV over IP has to use compression, especially over a 1 Gbit network, which may affect picture quality.
In summary, there is no one-size-fits-all solution and you should consider a number of technologies before making a decision. There is, of course, the possibility of mixing different distribution solutions.
