Akatia, located between two protected forests in Côte d’Ivoire, is the country's only primate rehabilitation centre, offering rescued chimpanzees a chance to learn natural behaviours in the forest.
Surrounded by nature, these orphans are closely monitored as they develop survival skills like finding food and recognizing danger.
Akatia works with nearby villages, employing locals and sourcing food from farmers, building a conservation network.
If Akouba from Akatia wins the Wild Animal Unique Personality Award, they plan to expand their facility to care for more orphaned chimps and create a semi-wild enclosure for those unable to fully return to the wild.
They’ll also continue conservation education, training eco-guards, and creating alternatives to illegal hunting.
