Did you know commercial forests play a huge role in capturing and storing carbon? Private working forests like ours are responsible for 3/4 of the carbon captured every year in America's forests! Here's why:
Young, fast-growing trees capture carbon quickly as they grow. Good commercial forest management encourages rapid tree growth.
When trees die and rot in the forest, they release carbon back into the atmosphere. When they are harvested and turned into products like lumber or furniture, they continue to store that carbon for the lifetime of the product.
For every tree we harvest, we plant several more, continuing the process repeatedly in what's known as sustainable forestry. In fact, Rayonier alone plants about 30 million trees per-year!
