We could never measure every tree on millions of acres of forests, but we have to take an inventory of the forest and calculate a good estimate of the volume of wood within our ownership. Forester Rusty Cobb takes us along on a timber cruise to show how he sets up and measures a plot of trees, then uses scientific calculations to determine the whole forest's volume. He demonstrates how we use prisms, diameter tape and clinometers to get the calculations we need.
