Duckadam became famous for his eleventh and final European Cup match, the 1986 European Cup Final in Seville, where Steaua Bucharest, the underdogs, faced FC Barcelona. When the game went to penalties after 120 minutes with the score still 0-0, he saved all four penalties taken by the opposition – José Ramón Alexanko, Ángel Pedraza, Pichi Alonso, and Marcos Alonso Peña. Steaua won the final 2-0 on penalties, and Duckadam has since been known as the "Hero of Seville."
Helmut Duckadam (born April 1, 1959, in Semlac; died December 2, 2024, in Bucharest) was a Romanian football goalkeeper and administrator from the German-speaking minority of the Banat Swabians. In the Romanian sports press, he was sometimes referred to as Ducadam, and his first name was frequently spelled Helmuth. In an interview, he explained that this was a mistake.
With Steaua Bucharest, he won two national championships, the Romanian Cup, and the 1986 European Cup; in the decisive penalty shootout in the final against FC Barcelona, he saved four of the Spanish team's shots. That same year, he was also named Romanian Footballer of the Year. The European Cup final would prove to be the last match of his career, as a vascular disease ended the playing career of the two-time international at the age of 27. From 2010, he would serve as president of Steaua for a decade.
