Thanks to the increased willingness to speak out, the issue of sexual violence is now at the forefront of current events. The problem is that, despite all the scandals, we rarely take the time to understand what the law actually says. Who knows the difference between rape and sexual assault? Or what legally defines consent? This conference, led by Julie Mattiussi, answers these questions and many others, on topics as varied as harassment, incest, marital rape, the statute of limitations, the age of consent, the presumption of innocence, and the handling of complaints. It provides an overview of the law concerning sexual violence and, through discussions with the audience, offers avenues for reflection on how to improve the system.
Julie Mattiussi is a lecturer in private law and criminal science at the University of Haute-Alsace. She holds a doctorate in private law and is the author of a thesis on the appearance of individuals (Les éditions hospitalières, 2018). She worked as a legal assistant at the Versailles High Court and conducts research in personal law on topics such as marital duty, sexual violence, non-discrimination law, and the law of compensation for personal injury.
