Considering Portal 2's comedic plot, it's likely that at some point the developers simply saw this as a funny coincidence and included a reference. And fanning theories out of this is a favorite pastime of fans. After all, the games are full of strange coincidences that fit together like a puzzle. For example, if Aperture is the underworld, deep underground, why couldn't the overworld be a citadel towering high in the sky? Even if the mythological references were thrown in for laughs, why were there so many of them? Why ancient Greek mythology? Could there really be a connection? Fundamental stories can easily overlap. Perhaps the connection between mythology and the portal isn't just a reference, but rather a reimagining?
