The infected, or as survivors sometimes call them—zombies—are not the walking dead or undead, as is commonly believed. They are living people infected with the green flu virus. It causes severe aggression and the loss of many functions, such as speech and self-preservation. They attack survivors until they kill their target or die themselves.
The infected react aggressively to any noise, bright light, or the bile of a fat man. They sometimes become aggressive toward each other if there is no other target nearby.
Judging by their aggression, their memory disappears immediately after infection, as they do not recognize their family members within minutes of speaking with them. Zombie Jimmy Gibbs Jr. doesn't react when survivors call his name.
But this likely depends on the circumstances of the infection. The man in the church was bitten an hour ago and was still able to speak, although he was already extremely aggressive towards the survivors.
The infected see the world through an orange filter. Survivors appear to them as monsters, which partially justifies this aggression. In the comic "The Sacrifice," one of the soldiers, while infected, was still able to speak, an exception to the previous fact, although he still saw the survivors as monsters.
The only zombie that can ignore these aggressive impulses is the zombie survivor. Their survival instinct overrides the virus, and they will often simply flee upon seeing players.
Zombies can withstand much more damage than humans and can easily jump from great heights without harm. However, they are extremely vulnerable to fire. They lack fine motor skills, making it impossible for them to interact with objects, such as door handles, forcing them to kick them down.
In a passive state, zombies often show signs of poor health. Their steps are uncoordinated, and when idle, they often need support, such as a wall. However, when a target is nearby, their behavior changes dramatically: they quickly and coordinatedly attack their target, ignoring any pain. If a zombie is harmed from a distance, it will clutch the wound.
A common infected on Expert difficulty deals 20 damage from the front and 10 from behind. On Easy, it deals 1 from the front and half from behind; on Normal, it deals 2 and 1; on Hard, it deals 5 and 2.5.
Zombies often form Hordes, which appear when a sufficiently strong stimulus is present. This usually occurs at the end of a game, or when performing certain actions required to complete a map. This is called a Crescendo event. More localized hordes, summoned by a fat man, a car alarm, or other avoidable map events, are called panic events. They can also be summoned by the Director, with an average of about 30 zombies, if, for example, one player is idle and fails to help their team. Hordes are more coordinated than individual zombies. For example, in the campaign, if there's a terrible downpour, they attack during the storm, when visibility is minimal.
A horde can be summoned by a car alarm. In both games, this car is the same model and resembles a 1989 Buick Century. The exception is the car from the first game's "Deathknell" (Left for Dead). In the second game, it was replaced.
Car alarms are not activated by fire or incendiary ammunition, or if shot at from a distance.
Some Horde panic event sound files are called Mini-Finale.
The horde sound for the Crescendo event consists of two modified Half-Life sounds, titled "Horror" and "Horror 2."
The clothing of common infected changes depending on the location. For example, in a hospital, both medical staff and patients are infected. Here, you might encounter airport workers. The clothing of ordinary civilians can change due to random combinations of several clothing types. Thus, the game offers over 1,500 clothing combinations, adding variety to zombies.
The military in Left 4 Dead 2, as well as in the comics, use the term "Whiskey Delta" to refer to the infected. (ON THE BRIDGE) In the NATO phonetic alphabet, this term translates as "Walking Dead." In the French version, they are called Mac Victor, and "MV" is an abbreviation for "Mort Vivant," meaning "Living Dead."
