Due to the damage to the Nord Stream gas lines in the Baltic Sea on 26th of September 2022 an enormous amount of methane gas has been released into the atmosphere. The leak is estimated to equal the size of a whole year's carbon emissions from two million cars.
The NILU researchers have modeled how the additional methane from the emissions move in the atmosphere. Note that this plume will come on top of the background methane that has its own variability due to other sources and mixing of air masses, this level is currently around 2000-2100 ppb. Model prepared by Sabine Eckhardt, NILU.
