It might not have escaped your attention that I have been streaming some of my races recently. As a dedicated VR racer and not wanting to compromise my own racing experience I’ve not been able to do this until lately. So what changed? Well I have a little more headroom since upgrading my graphics card and I’ve fixed my wired networking which was actually slower than wi-fi until recently. This has allowed me to start investigating the possibility of using the network to stream a video signal over to my studio rig where that can do all the hard
work, Sound like magic? Not really but there are plenty of moving parts to deal with so let’s have a look into it shall we?

So we’re sold on giving NDI a try, how do we get started?

We’ll need the latest version of OBS and then download obs-ndi. At the time of recording the latest version supports version 30 and newer of OBS.

As part of the download for obs-ndi it is also worth picking up the NDI 5 runtime for your operating system.

Both of these are simple installers so shouldn’t take long to get them all installed and ready.

Troubleshooting with the monitor

NDI does supply some tools that allow you to check that a signal is getting through the network. All we really care about is the “Studio Monitor” one but we have to download the whole core suite. If we don’t see the name of our computer in the left hand burger menu then no signal is coming across the network. At least not to our machine. This doesn’t provide a huge amount of extra help but allows us to identify that the problem is with the network, or source machine and not with OBS. In our case it was the gaming rig. I made sure to add OBS Studio as an exception in Windows Defender and the signal sprang to life. Can't stop the signal Mal…

Audio Offset

Multiple NDI audio streams can cause some syncing issues. If the off-set is stable (which it should be) like I had with my microphone, then this can be corrected on the streaming PC. Click the vertical ellipsis menu on your audio source and head over to advanced properties. This will give you all your audio sources with some settings. We’re looking for Sync Offset.
