Everest Three Passes Trek: Kathmandu to Namche
After dreaming about it for decades, and planning for over a year, I finally got the opportunity to hike the Everest Base Camp 3 Passes trek with some friends last March. In order to avoid the frequently delayed flights to Lukla, we decided to take a jeep from Kathmandu to Salleri and start our hike from there. While Lukla's Tenzing–Hillary airport is considered to be the most dangerous in the world, the speedy 10 hour drive through thin, windy mountain roads made flying out of Tenzing–Hillary airport 2 weeks later relaxing by comparison.
After reaching Salleri, the next few days hiking to Namche gave us a rich, cultural experience that sadly most trekkers don't get to see. If you're looking at doing either the Everest Base Camp or the 3 passes trek, consider taking a jeep to Salleri and hiking from there, as you'll experience a significantly less traveled section of the trail.
