Hiking ICELAND: Central Highlands
After completing the Laugavegur trail, my son and I continued northward into the central and northern highlands of Iceland, our final goal being Akureyri on the northern coast, where we would fly back to Reykjavik. After leaving Landmannalaugar, the terrain became much more stark and surprisingly dry. For the next week, we followed the monotonous, dusty F-roads sandwiched between the 50 mile wide Vatnajökull glacier and the 20 mile wide Hofsjökull glacier, which dominated the western horizon. After 8 days of hiking, we dropped down the final valley in Akureyri, where we spent a day and a half enjoying pastries, smoked lamb, and fish & chips...well deserved after 2 weeks of nonstop hiking.
