Recording Roast Temperature, PART 2 Setting up an Artisan / Phidgets / Popper coffee roaster
This is Part 2, where we actually to a roast using Artisan, on our Popper coffee roaster.
There’s a range of options about adding a thermometer to an air coffee roaster to measure or log temperature during the roast cycle. The ultimate focus is how to us Artisan to record roast temperatures, using Phidgets modules to connect your computer via USB.
My target viewer here is people who really DON’T want to complicate their roasting routine, but feel that watching and recording the temperature would supplement their sense (sight, sound, smell of the roast) to make better decisions and get more consistency. This video is trying to show how the process to connect your computer to a roaster is not that difficult … yes, even I did it.
An upside is that Artisan is used on many types of roasters, so if you ever want to grow and expand your coffee roasting interest, the skill to work with Phidgets and Artisan is transferable! The downside: With many roasters it’s not so easy to install thermal probes into a fixed position poking into the bean mass. Even with drum home roasters like the Behmor, it’s not easy.
