This lecture ranges widely over tragic masterpieces from the Greeks to Woyzeck, An Inspector Calls, Miller and Edward Bond, to challenge Aristotle's claim in the Poetics that the ideal tragic hero fell from royal status. The lecture was first delivered in Berlin in 2016.
