A video, right from the pages of history, undertaken from Howrah to Jhansi in the 12175 Howrah-Gwalior Chambal Express. The stretch of tracks from Allahabad to Jhansi, along the southern fringes of Uttar Pradesh, passes though some exquisite landscape of the Vindhya Range. There are numerous rivers - both small and prominent - that cut across this region along with forests in the earlier part gradually culminating into the famed Bundelkhand region around Mahoba-Orccha-Jhansi.
This journey, rather the video, is an attempt to cover the above stretch completely in daylight to get a feel of the region - in peak monsoon. Add to that the semaphore signaling systems and the host of diesel locomotives that ruled the region until recently. Sadly - as you may have understood by now - all of this is past now. The route is completely electrified and even Chambal runs with modern LHB rakes. The old world feel has been lost for ever.
