Ms. Hilde is a Senior Arctic Official, Ambassador for the Arctic and Antarctic,
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norway. She was the special guest speaker at
SaGHAA Webinar 2020. According to her the Polar Regions are the epicenters
of global warming and studying them will give us valuable insight which can be
extrapolated to other vulnerable geographies like the Himalayas. She also
spoke about the importance of Global legal frameworks for Norway. Ms. Hilde
said that the United Nations Law of the Sea forms a solid basis for cooperation
in the Arctic region. She re-iterated Norway’s commitment to the Paris
Agreement to reduce emissions by at least 40% by 2030, compared with the
1990 level. She spoke about India’s historic co-operation with Norway in
scientific research. In fact, two Indian Students, Ankit Pramanik and Vikram
Goel are undergoing training with Norway’s team in the Arctic and Antarctic.
Also, In the Norwegian-Indian MADICE project, researchers rely on both the
Norwegian Troll station and the Indian Maitri station, which are neighbors in
the Antarctic.
