Madrid, March 14 (efesalud.com). Myasthenia gravis is a chronic, autoimmune, neuromuscular disease characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue, beginning in the eye area with drooping eyelids and double vision, progressing to arm and leg fatigue, and eventually affecting the respiratory system.
"In 'Tus Medicamentos' (Your Medications), a video blog sponsored by the Viatris Foundation for Health, we want to highlight a condition unknown to the vast majority of the population, but not to the approximately 15,000 people who suffer from it in countries like Spain," emphasizes journalist Javier Tovar.
Around 700 new cases are diagnosed each year, 10-15% in childhood and adolescence; although throughout Europe, there is an increasing incidence in people over 50.
Tovar, director of EFEsalud, interviews Dr. Jesús Porta-Etessam, head of the Neurology Department at the San Carlos University Clinical Hospital and vice president of the Spanish Society of Neurology (SEN); and Nieves Rodríguez, delegate in the Community of Madrid for the Spanish Myasthenia Association (AMES).
Doctors and patients focus on two fundamental issues: "Early diagnosis and systematic research to find innovative drugs in order to take a step closer to a complete cure for the disease."
