What is a parastomal hernia?
A stoma is an artificial opening surgically created in the abdominal wall to allow the normal flow of feces or urine, if necessary. Parastomal hernias are the most common complication in patients with stomas. Recent international studies estimate an incidence of 30% in the first year, 40% in two years, and less than 50% in follow-ups longer than two years. A higher incidence of parastomal hernias has also been demonstrated in terminal stomas than in lateral ones. Parastomal hernias can occur due to a gradual or sudden collapse of the abdominal wall.
