In this new episode of UPsalute, we discuss kidney transplantation with Prof. Luciano De Carlis, surgeon, full professor of Surgery at the University of Milan-Bicocca, and director of General Surgery and Transplantation as well as the multi-specialty Surgical Department at Niguarda Hospital. He performed the first living-donor liver transplant in Italy, the first living-donor kidney transplant using robotic harvesting, the first adult-to-adult split liver transplant, the first liver transplant from a donor in cardiac arrest, and the first crossover kidney transplant from a Samaritan donor.
What does the Niguarda Transplant Foundation do?
Giving a single voice to a large community of people, helping transplant patients and those waiting for an organ, and, at the same time, their families who feel lost and lacking the "good antibodies" to face such a complex battle. This is the mission of the NTF, the Niguarda Transplant Foundation of Milan, founded on September 13, 2016, to support those who have seen or expect to see their lives changed thanks to abdominal organ transplants.
A human chain of doctors, healthcare workers, and volunteers who daily support patients and families to ensure they receive care—both medical and spiritual—during the transplant process. At the same time, the foundation is at the forefront of promoting scientific research, raising public awareness of organ donation, and, above all, developing new technologies to make abdominal transplants increasingly cutting-edge at Niguarda Hospital, a national and international flagship in this field.
After all, the first kidney transplant was performed at this very hospital in 1972. Since then, over 7,000 people have had the opportunity to receive a liver, kidney, pancreas, or combined transplant (multiple organs at the same time), or have come to Niguarda from other facilities across the country seeking better post-transplant care. And, to date, approximately 2,500 liver transplants have been performed since 1985, approximately 3,700 kidney transplants, and just under 500 pancreas transplants. Several factors are driving this growth, primarily the improvements in available techniques that Niguarda has implemented in recent years. Among these is the non-beating heart transplant, a procedure that, thanks to the use of highly sophisticated technologies, allows the use of organs from donors whose death occurs due to cardiac arrest. And surgical robotics, an indispensable ally in ensuring minimally invasive procedures and improved post-operative recovery.
In 2015, the Milanese hospital performed the first non-beating heart liver transplant in Italy. Since then, the procedures have been refined, thanks in part to the use of increasingly high-performance equipment. The General Surgery and Transplant Center at the Niguarda Metropolitan Hospital in Milan, directed by Professor Luciano De Carlis, is now one of the leading European centers for transplantation and one of the few centers in Lombardy to perform transplants for almost all organs (heart, lung, pancreas, kidney, liver), as well as tissue and cell transplants.
