STD Diseases & Related Conditions
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), are infections that are primarily spread through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. They can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Here are some common STDs:
Chlamydia: Caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is one of the most common STDs worldwide. It can infect both men and women and can lead to serious health problems if left untreated.
Gonorrhea: Caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Like chlamydia, it can infect both men and women and can lead to serious complications if not treated.
Syphilis: Caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum. It progresses through stages and can have serious long-term consequences if not treated, including damage to the heart, brain, and other organs.
Herpes (HSV): Caused by the herpes simplex virus. There are two types: HSV-1 (commonly causes oral herpes or cold sores) and HSV-2 (usually responsible for genital herpes). Herpes is a lifelong infection with periodic flare-ups.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): A group of related viruses, some of which can lead to the development of genital warts or, in certain cases, various types of cancer, including cervical, anal, and throat cancer.
HIV/AIDS: Caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It attacks the immune system, making it harder for the body to fight off infections and diseases. If left untreated, it can progress to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
