According to Waititi, test audiences were so upset with Odin that they decided to reshoot the first scene in a different way. Odin's death scene was too extreme for a movie that was supposed to be fun and playful. Although the original cut was removed from the film, some key elements were reflected on the big screen, such as the brothers donning armor to prepare for battle and opening the Bifrost to Asgard to escape.
In retrospect, it's understandable that the filmmakers moved away from this darker version of the Thor: Ragnarok opening. The fiction in which Odin was able to say goodbye to his sons and die in peace was more touching.
