Why did Captain America sleep for 70 years?
Captain America was piloting a plane that was too damaged to be landed safely in a populated area. Rather than risk unnecessary damage and casualties, he decides to crash the ship in the Arctic.
Normal humans would have died either from impact, or from starvation and hypothermia. Steve Rogers was a super-soldier with enhanced durability, so he was frozen and incapacitated but survived. Howard Stark (Tony's father) managed to recover the Tessaract but was not able to find Rogers and the ship.
S.H.I.E.L.D made it their objective to find him and so they did.
