Namibia Bird Club talk by Dr Linda van den Heever (Species Conservation Programme Manager/BirdLife South Africa)
Until recently the extent, source and effects of lead poisoning in southern Africa’s Cape and White-backed Vultures were undescribed and poorly understood. Since 2016 BirdLife South Africa has bridged this important knowledge gap through a concerted research campaign, providing the first scientific evidence that vultures are ingesting fragments of lead ammunition imbedded in the carrion they feed on and, as a result, vulture chicks are displaying a range of negative physiological effects that adversely affect their survival once they fledge.
This presentation was held on 24 April 2024 at the Namibia Scientific Society.
