From Science to Nature Conservation

Namibia Bird Club talk by Prof. Jolanda Veldhuis and Ruben Fijn

The Your Tern Project aims to fill specific knowledge gaps that exist around Damara Terns to adequately inform the “Damara Tern Species Action Plan”. The Your Tern Project also aims to develop an outreach program targeted at school children to improve nature awareness and stimulate nature conservation from an early age onwards. In this talk, the aims of the project, as well as some of the exciting results collected thus far, are presented.

The talk was presented by Jolanda Veldhuis and Ruben Fijn.
Jolanda works as an associate professor in Communication Science at VU University Amsterdam. Her main research focus is on behaviour change and science communication in young adolescents. In the Your Tern Project, Jolanda is responsible for the development, evaluation, and implementation of the outreach program.
Ruben is a seabird ecologist working for a research consultancy in the Netherlands (Waardenburg Ecology). His main focus is on the ecology of terns. In the Your Tern Project, he is responsible for some of the ecological fieldwork, data analysis and project management.

This presentation was held on 17 July 2024 at the Namibia Scientific Society.
