We’re all aware of generational communication differences. Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, and Millennials don’t relate in the same ways. So how can you connect with people of various ages? In this video, I talk about the importance of image – your personal online presence – for showing others who you are.
People around my age, who comprise Generation X, aren’t into small talk. We don’t do it often or particularly well. Unlike the Boomers, we don’t enjoy chatting about our weekends around the water cooler at work.
In many ways, it seems Millennials are even more detached. While they do spend a great deal of time texting, messaging, and emailing, they’re less apt to make phone calls or have face-to-face conversations. They live online, where the importance of image can’t be overstated.
Given these generational communication differences, how do you bridge the age gap and give others insight into your character? How can you let your personality shine through so that your colleagues and customers respond to you?
It’s helpful to know how each generation communicates. Boomers are interested in your history, background, tenure, and track record. Gen Xers want to know what makes you special and unique. And Millennials need to see the real you – the person behind the brand.
Networking has changed. If you want to connect with others, you have to recognize the importance of image. What online image of yourself do you share with the world? It should be both personal and universal, both intimate and public, both serious and lighthearted.
Generational communication differences dictate that you speak to others in ways they can understand and appreciate. Learn to reach out to others thoughtfully and strategically, and you’ll form meaningful bonds with people of all ages.
