A couple of eye-bowls 👁️🥣 and how to make them 👀
Eyeball or eye bowls? 🤔 👁️
Difficulty :🖤🖤🖤 (/5) , parts are annoying to source and it's somewhat tedious but using the eye tutorial from the "making a shifty peeper" video not too difficult.
How I would suggest you do this if you want to make one: these instructions are slightly different than the video because I learned things when I made it the first time.
Spray the inside of a clear bauble that splits in half (found online) with white spray paint, being sure it adheres to plastic and let it fully cure. Then line the inside either with paper clay or acrylic caulk (for the caulk, no more than a quarter inch thick at a time, and work in sections, avoid quick dry) .
Before sticking your eyes in paint them whatever color you're hoping for (with doll eyes, use a solvent-based paint as at least these ones have a polystyrene casing)
Then stick in the main eyes, the blinking doll eyes are kind of annoying to find online but there are lots of different eye options online or at local craft stores.
Let that fully cure then come back in with more caulk (Also no more than a quarter inch thick) and fill in the white spaces (I suggest doing it in sections). Then sprinkle in some slightly larger white glass beads and then sprinkle in slightly smaller clear glass beads (or what ever color you want. I'm not your boss) . Tamp those down slightly with a brush you don't mind ruining.
Once that caulk is dry, you can be finished or get a little black paint (I used nail polish) into a syringe with a small enough gauge tip to fit in the bead holes.
Then let that fully dry and finally I suggest sealing the entire thing with either a spray sealer or I used a clear varnish. To be aware, this may slightly color the piece depending on what you use.
For the eye lens , You can of course just draw the eye on the outside of the ball with sharpie and then seal it (was something like a clear spray sealer would be my suggestion) or if you want it to be a separate piece like mine, get another bauble of the same size and cut off around 3/4" from the bottom . I suggest using a Dremel with a plastic cutter to do this and then sand the edge either with a dremel or sandpaper. Then using instructions you can find in my shifty peeper video draw your eye. It doesn't have to be blue but you do want to have two tones of your color in the details phase. This one you can clean up the outside with the alcohol wipe. And I would use an industrial strength black sharpie for the pupil, possibly in a dotting motion to get coverage.
