Canelo Alvarez, the preeminent figure in boxing, is set to defend his undisputed super middleweight championship against Jermell Charlo on September 30th in Las Vegas. This announcement marks a departure from the initial plan, where Canelo was slated to face Jermall Charlo, Jermell's twin brother, as part of a three-fight deal with PBC. However, due to personal challenges that Jermall Charlo is currently dealing with, the larger middleweight titleholder was unable to take part in the bout.

Consequently, Canelo Alvarez will now square off against Jermell Charlo, who holds the distinction of being the undisputed junior middleweight champion. Despite Jermell Charlo's record not venturing above the 154-pound limit and Canelo Alvarez's achievement in securing a title at 175 pounds, Charlo will hold a height advantage of 4 inches and a reach advantage of 2½ inches. #Canelo #JermellCharlo #CaneloAlvarez #Saul

Anticipating the upcoming fight, questions arise about the possible dynamics in the ring, Canelo's future prospects, and the fate of Jermell Charlo's titles. Mike Coppinger and Ben Baby delve into these aspects:

Jermall Charlo is a distinguished pugilist who previously held ESPN's No. 2 ranking among middleweights, second only to Gennadiy Golovkin. However, inactivity led to his removal from the rankings. Known for his potent power jabs, Jermall has maintained an unblemished record, although his last contest dates back to June 2021, when he secured a hard-earned victory against Juan Macias Montiel.

Remarkably, despite his inactivity, Jermall Charlo has retained his WBC title in the 160-pound division. This situation raises eyebrows, especially with an interim champion, Carlos Adames, urging Jermall to either face him or face the prospect of being stripped of his title.

In response, WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman has cited Jermall Charlo's mental well-being as a factor in permitting him to retain the title. According to ESPN Deportes' Salvador Rodriquez, Jermall expressed that he wasn't adequately prepared for a high-stakes bout within the available timeframe, underscoring the significance of this event.
