Ariel Helwani, one of MMA's top reporters, announced on Tuesday that he will be leaving Vox Media and Spotify when his contracts with both companies expire. Helwani, who has been a prominent figure in MMA journalism, shared the news just before heading to Paris to cover the Olympics for CBC.
Helwani expressed that, despite initial optimism about renewing his contracts, he has decided to move on from both companies. Reflecting on his time at Vox and Spotify, Helwani described the past three years as an "incredible stretch" following his departure from ESPN. He highlighted the unique opportunities and experiences he gained, working alongside great people at both companies.
"This has been an incredible three-year stretch post-ESPN. I got to do a lot of cool things with a lot of great people," Helwani said. "After many, many, many, many months of contemplating and dissecting and thinking about what the next move should be, I’ve decided to move on from both companies… I couldn’t have dreamt of a better scenario post-ESPN than this, working for two incredible companies filled with incredible people."
Despite receiving generous offers to stay, Helwani ultimately decided it was time for a change. He hinted that while he isn’t ready to announce his next move, it is something he is "incredibly excited about" and that it had to be something truly special to leave Vox and Spotify.
Helwani also looked back on his time at Vox Media, where he returned in 2021 after stints at Fox and ESPN. He expressed his appreciation for the experience, saying it helped him regain his voice and confidence. Similarly, he praised his time with Spotify and The Ringer, where he enjoyed connecting with fans in real-time and working under Bill Simmons.
As for what comes next, Helwani promised to reveal more details in the coming days or weeks, and certainly before Labor Day. While he remains tight-lipped about his future plans, he assured his fans that the next chapter in his career is something he's been dreaming about for a while.
