IVC filters are small devices used to prevent blood clots from reaching the heart and lungs. However, the FDA found nearly 1,000 reports of issues with the device such as breakage and migration. The cone shaped devices catch clots as they move toward the heart and lungs. These filters can be removed but are often left in place for long periods of time.
Over time, IVC filters can fracture and even move to vital organs, including the heart.
C.R. Bard and Cook medical filters are among those allegedly prone to complications, but other companies are also currently facing litigation over the devices, too.
