PV technology is based on the use of semiconductor materials, typically silicon, which can generate an electric current when exposed to sunlight.

PV cells, often referred to as solar cells, are the fundamental building blocks of photovoltaic systems. These cells consist of layers of semiconductor material that can absorb photons from sunlight and release electrons, creating an electric current. When connected together in modules or arrays, these cells produce electricity suitable for a wide range of applications.

Solar Cells:

Solar cells, commonly known as photovoltaic cells, are the core components of solar panels and systems. These cells are responsible for the direct conversion of sunlight into electricity. Here's how they work:

Absorption of Sunlight: Solar cells are designed to absorb photons, which are particles of light, from the sun. When sunlight strikes the surface of a solar cell, it provides energy to the cell.

Generation of Electrons: The absorbed energy excites electrons in the semiconductor material within the cell, causing them to become mobile and creating an electric current.

Collection of Electrons: The electric current generated by the excited electrons is collected by metal contacts on the cell's surface. This current can then be harnessed for various applications.

Direct Current (DC) Output: Solar cells produce direct current (DC) electricity. In many applications, this DC electricity is converted into alternating current (AC) using inverters for use in homes and businesses.

Solar cells come in various types and materials, including monocrystalline, polycrystalline, and thin-film, each with its own set of advantages and efficiency levels. Solar panels, also known as photovoltaic modules, consist of multiple solar cells interconnected to generate more electricity.

Solar power, generated through the combination of PV technology and solar cells, is a clean and sustainable energy source that has a broad range of applications, from providing electricity for homes and businesses to powering spacecraft and remote installations. It plays a vital role in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and mitigating the environmental impact of energy production.
